Everybody hates build.xml (code reuse in Ant)

Most projects I've been involved with that use Ant have a hateful build.xml, written in fits and starts by people who would rather be doing almost anything else. Can you write good code in Ant, even if you aren't paralysed by fear? Can you write reusable code in build.xml?
