Then active duty as an officer in the US Air Force. Goes to the west coast after serving in the army, studies design at the [San Francisco Art Institute](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Art_Institute), photography at [San Francisco State College](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_State_University) and takes part in legal studies on the then legal drug LSD. Becomes part of the counterculture.
