WinBoat and FreeRDP Weren't the Problems. The Internet Was.
In a weird turn of events, FreeRDP and WinBoat take a ton of flak for something they weren't responsible for, and by now, have mostly recovered. What _actually_ happened, was WinBoat, a container tech that shoves Windows into a VM inside of a container, was being used by someone that exposed their machine directly to the internet. And if there's one thing we know about OSes being directly connected to the internet... it's that they'll be pwned sooner or later. Probably sooner... as we can see. On the bright side, WinBoat has (likely not from Dan, but) taken Dan's suggestion to just listen locally in case someone really does stick it out on the internet. Unfortunately, we can't directly blame Windows for this one. Shame, really. ;) π€Support us on Patreonπ€ https://patreon.com/linuxuserspace # WinBoat/FreeRDP Drama OMG Ubuntu article https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2025/11/linux-ppa-ransomware-investigated-no-malware Reddit Thread https://www.reddit.com/r/linux4noobs/comments/1op33pa/rans
