The Origins of Folk Horror
In this video I explore the literary origins of the folk horror subgenre, focusing especially on the "Wicker Man" variety of folk horror, wherein a rural village shelter a sinister religious cult. This has become a common horror trope these days, but where did the trope start? Corrections: Reddit user "cygnat" pointed out that the original use of the phrase "Old Religion" came form folklorist Charles Godfrey Leland and the book "Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches" (1889). Therefore the use of the phrase in Ritual by David Pinner doesnt actually point to Margaret Murray as an influence. Thanks cygnat!
