What happened to the Disney's America site?
Disney’s America is one of the most famous never built theme parks in history. The park was planned as part of the early 1990s Disney decade, with Michael Eisner hoping to lead the company on an unprecedented growth path. The concept of Disney’s America, although creative, proved to be controversial. The proposed parcel of land was only a few miles away from the Manassas Battlefield of the American Civil War. The park was being sold as a way to educate and entertain the public, but there were concerns over the commercialization of tragic events like the American Civil War. On September 28, 1994 Disney announced that they would no longer be build the park. The strong opposition to the project, as well as the financial disaster of Euro Disneyland lead to the project being abandoned. Of the nearly 3000 acres of land that the project needed, Disney had already bought 600 with options for the further 2000 acres that it estimated it would need.
