Woodpecker- Eating Apples??
Pileated Woodpeckers Dryocopus pileatus- fairly common here, and individuals seem to vary from quite shy- as in can't get within 30 feet/10metres to very relaxed- as in I can come quite close when taking photos etc. This one is pretty relaxed. It has been flying into the yard recently, announcing itself with the usual loud Woody the Woodpecker calls, then landing on one or another of the apple trees which are close to the house. It then flies up into one of the apple-crabs (small apples, between crabs and regular apples, but they are quite sweet-actually delicious) and proceeds to happily peck away at the sweet flesh. It's my first time seeing this- earlier this fall there was a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker feeding on the regular crab-apples. Music excerpt: Rising Sun by DivKid from the YouTube Audio Library.
