Stung! I disturbed Bald-faced Hornets on the Hottest Day-they showed restraintπ
around 35C/95F yesterday, I was doing some weeding (bushwhacking!) in an overgrown strip between native/xeric beds and a large spruce tree-pulling up mounds of tall grass, dandelions, hacking native shrubs back etc. Suddenly felt a sharp pain in my hand, but didn't see what got me! Dashed out of there, made spit poultices from Common Plantain/ Plantago major (chew a leaf, apply goop). Re-approached slowly and saw a modest sized nest of Bald-face Hornets / Dolichovespula maculata. In spite of their fierce reputation, they didn't react that aggressively- yes one sting- that hurt like a **son of a sea captain** for a few minutes (short-lived pain, or the spit poultice really worked?)- but they didn't chase me, and only the one sting, nor did they react when I was back within 10 feet or so filming... Guess which spot will not get weeded any more this year?? lol I've never seen a nest so near the ground before, new cause for caution/paranoia...lol- I'm already cautious with holes in the gro
