Ruffed Grouse Feeding in Foggy Frosty Monochrome February Dusk
I saw a couple of Ruffed Grouse, Bonasa umbellus, cross the driveway to the ditch in front of the neighbours', then a little later saw this one heading back the other way. It was moving among those clumps of grass etc-- I think probably looking for rose hips on the wild rose bushes, but may have been going for grass seeds too. Then it went back up that bank, I was expecting to shoot it crossing the open area, but *zoom* it took instant flight- they tend to fly very fast and low. When I looked, it was way up in the poplar trees across the road, with a couple of others- I guess the others left the ditch sooner. They can balance on seemingly fine twigs and eat the leaf and catkin buds on the trees (next year's not yet active buds)- this doesn't seem to affect the tree's crop of leaves or flowers.
