Rhenen Zoo, Ouwehands Dierenpark before and during World War II

After the Zoo officially opened its gates to the public for the first time on 18 June 1932, it was a success right from the start. The Zoo drew large numbers of visitors. However, Nazi Germany disturbed the bright future ahead. The war years, 1940-1945, devastated buildings, and also the animal collection – especially the predators, not only once but twice. and reconstruction was only slow to start. Nevertheless, due to the resilience of the Ouwehand family and their staff, the zoo was restored twice to its former glory.
