Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens in 1966

Los Angeles’ animal collection that had been a popular destination for the citizens of Los Angeles since 1912 became Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens when relocated to its current site in Griffith Park. After its grand opening on 28 November 1966 the Zoo’s popularity remained. In 2022 footage unearthed of a CBS 8 special report in December 1966 on this new Los Angeles Zoo. The film also includes footage of the San Diego Zoo which was celebrating 50 years in operation in 1966. Director Dr. Charles Schroeder of the San Diego Zoo was interviewed, because he gave the LA Zoo guidance in the building process. It appears that he was not completely satisfied by the fact that some of his advices were no taken into consideration by LA Zoo management (just watch and listen carefully). Oddly enough, the film ends with a man feeding an elephant, which was exactly what zoo management firmly discouraged.
