**A revolutionary way to keep chimpanzees in captivity** In 1966 Jan van Hooff, biologist and ethologist - and brother of Antoon van Hooff, director of Burgersβ Zoo at the time β returned from a three month trip to the USA. In New Mexico he visited the Aeromedical Research Laboratory where chimpanzees were kept for experimenting and preparing them for trips into outer space in anticipation of the USA to send the first astronauts to the moon. As chimpanzees are of the similar posture and built as humans, and somewhat similar intelligence as well, they will make for good laboratory animals for this particular case. However, the US Airforce people in charge of these laboratory animals keep themselves up to date with relevant literature. Keeping the chimps in a large troop instead of in small cages as individuals would improve their mental health, and therefore the reliability of the test results, according to the literature they said.
