Can the Maple Leafs actually execute the rebuild they need?

For all intents and purposes, the Toronto Maple Leafs season is over, particularly now that captain Auston Matthews is done for the season after a knee-on-knee hit from Radko Gudas. After a lost season, can the leadership of the team actually make the changes needed to avoid a sequel next year and beyond?
