Understanding SMPS: PCMC breadboard circuit w/ discrete logic
With a SR Latch, a Comparitor and a Clock we create a simple Peak Current Mode Control circuit, as is commonly found in Buck Regulators inner loop. With a Capacitor and charge and discharge resistors, we simulate inductor current on a more human timescale, effectively building a buck charge pump in the process. We can observe that PCMC is a fixed-frequency pulse width modulated control, we observe the width of the pulses changing going through different loads and setpoints We can also observe the problem of sub-harmonic oscillations at higher pulse widths, with voltages changing periodically at a multiple of clock cycles. Techniques such as slope compensation may help break these up in practical designs. https://www.ti.com/lit/an/snva555/snva555.pdf #electronics #smps #buckconverter #powerelectronics #powersupply #opamp
