10mm Aurora with a touch of purple

January 23 2026 – Captured in Arctic Norway near Narvik. I went back to these frames over and over to try and remove the strong purple, but it's really there. It's been somewhat baffling to me in the past week just how much purple is turning up during certain aurora events. I've been shooting auroras for 15 years and never seen so much of it. I used to associate the purple hues as "I've got the colour balance wrong". But it's genuine. It's part of the phenomenon. Green is the default, and red is the fringe. But some nights purple comes in where the red misses out. It's a little more than just "Red + Blue = Purple".
