Motorola's early electronic fluorescent lamp ballasts

⏱ 27:23 🌐 makertube.net

In the 1990s, the magnetic fluorescent lamp ballast was still king, and the few mains-powered electronic ballasts on the market were either token efforts by magnetic ballast manufacturers, or pet projects by independent manufacturers, all for a non-existent segment, only purchased by the most eccentric of electricians. Motorola saw an opportunity, especially with the new F32T8 lamp that showed promise in replacing the incumbant F40T12, and decided to dive head-first into the electronic fluorescent lamp ballast market. What resulted were the highest-quality and highest-tech ballasts of the 1990s - good enough that the likes of GE re-labeled them, and Sylvania decided to buy Motorola's lighting division.
