When we adopted her from a shelter in 2022, Carrey Beg (Manx gaelic for "little friend" - our choice of name) was skittish and frightened, often lashing out with claws at anyone she felt threatened by. The shelter that were looking after her were honest and said she might not make a good pet because of this, but we became determined to help. She was 18 months old and had spent some time on the streets, though we think she may have been owned before that, it's all unclear, and there was definitely trauma involved. We knew she needed time, peace and quiet, and a sense of safety, which we were lucky enough to be able to provide. After a few weeks of hiding and hissing at us, and a lot of patience on our part, she eventually came out and started exploring, and from there became more and more settled. She still has her moments of fear which will never leave her. She hates being handled or picked up, and this may never change. But she comes to us with trust and affection on her own terms, an
