Old, loud MFM hard drive runs performance test
I got the Epson Apex Plus' hard drive functioning (simply by luck) to the point where I could install the MS-DOS 3.2 and SpinRite II on it. Here is the drive going through a series of performance and accuracy tests in SpinRite. I have discovered with the help of user vwestlife that the video card is conflicting with the hard drive controller, causing the memory parity error. The Kyocera KC-20B is a 3.5" half height 20 MB MFM hard drive produced in the late 1980's. It was a cheap drive at the time and a little on the slow side, but they sold reasonably well and were fairly reliable. It is one of the more interesting sounding hard drives ever made, as the stepper motor that drives the head actuator produces a loud, high-pitched mechanical whine when long seeks are performed. (Under normal use, it usually produces no more than gurgling and knocking sounds.) Aside from not liking to come to life when it is cold, this drive still works perfect, and has no bad sectors!
