The scale of your artwork really matters in how the viewer will interpret the piece. When I worked in galleries I saw so much art that just seems big to be big. But Big art doesn’t equal better or more important art. If it’s big the piece will be able to be viewed by multiple people at once and I’d want the subject of the piece to be able to hold up to that. Big art feels like it’s yelling to me. If it’s small the viewer will need to get closer to the piece. It’s more intimate and communicates in more of a whisper. When I worked with traditional media I would create the work with the gallery in mind since scale is relative to the space. If I didn’t know the gallery then I considered the average size of a person I treated it as a conceptual decision for the piece.. Working digitally i have the advantage of choosing the scale of my art when exhibiting it I’ve printed them as small at 10” to as big at 10’.
