I’m sure I can’t be alone here but I’ve definitely not been paid for my art jobs before. BUT I’ve found a solution that cost very little and got me my full payment! There was this one time I was owned money for an art project I did. I created the invoice and sent it to the collaborator. 30 days past and they didn’t pay me so I emailed them. They apologized said they’d pay me later that week and didn’t. This same loop continued for a couple weeks. Finally, I contacted the non-profit lawyers for the arts in illinois. Having the lawyer involved got me paid. Please don’t think just because you're a small independent artist that you don’t the power to be treated fairly.
