Office Protest: Fight Against a Landlord's $4950 Lease Termination Fee
Expropriate landlords! Union members braved the cold for a morning protest against Daniel Li and SPG Canada. Saima is a single mother living in a homeless shelter. She signed a lease with SPG Canada, a company represented by landlord Daniel Li. She was assured that her rent would be subsidized by the government. When the subsidy fell through, she was told she would need to pay $4950 (three months rent) to get off the lease. She has never lived in this unit. Daniel Li, let Saima out of her lease! After organizing with other tenants, door-knocking, and reading through court cases and public posts concerning Li, we are also demanding that no charge be applied to tenants who are requesting to move out after dealing with unresolved flooding, infestations, and necessary repairs. We demand a plan of action from SPG Canada for how they will address maintenance in the future in a way that respects tenantsβ dignity and needs. Coverage by @therover.community.
