Rolling out the iconic red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival

Hollywood icons brought glamour to the red carpet at the 79th Cannes Film Festival's opening ceremony at Palais des Festivals on Tuesday night. Workers wheeled out long rolls of red carpet and laid them down outside the Palais des Festivals et des Congres, the primary venue for the festival.This year’s edition, which runs until May 23, will pit stalwarts of arthouse cinema such as Poland's Pawel Pawlikowski against a small pool of newer voices.A-listers with films premiering this year include Scarlett Johansson, Rami Malek, Javier Bardem, John Travolta and Lea Seydoux.There are 22 films in competition for the Palme d'Or prize awarded at the closing ceremony, with independent cinema heavyweights including Pedro Almodovar and Laszlo Nemes.
