Why are young people facing a ‘national crisis of opportunity’?
More than one million sixteen to twenty four year olds aren’t working - and it's costing the state £125 billion a year. They youth unemployment review revealed that one in six young people will be out of work, education or training by the end of the decade. The report found that a changing labour market, fewer entry-level roles, and a rise in ill health in young people who build a reliance on the welfare system have all contributed to this vacuum of unemployment. It added that education doesn’t get you ready for the labour market and Covid took away many first time jobs in hospitality.
