Foreign criminals to face appeals from abroad in crackdown on deportation delays
More foreign criminals will now have to appeal deportation decisions from abroad, under an expanded Government scheme aimed at stopping offenders from exploiting the UK's legal system to delay removal. The 'Deport Now, Appeal Later' policy will nearly triple in scope, from eight to 23 countries, allowing the UK to deport more foreign offenders before they can challenge the decision. Those deported will still be able to participate in their appeal hearings via video link. The move is part of the Government's broader Plan for Change, which aims to restore order to the UK's immigration system and ease pressure on prisons and detention centres.
