Horrific tram disaster in Lisbon leaves at least 16 dead after carriage cable failed. Lisbon authorities said on Thursday that sixteen people have died after the city's iconic Elevador da Glória funicular derailed and slammed into a hotel corner building on 3rd September evening as it made its descent towards the city centre. Shortly after its journey began, the first sign of disaster presented itself at the bottom of the hill, some 850ft away. The opposite cable car suddenly shunted, witnesses said, then unaware of the impending tragedy at the other end.
