'Dublin's Corbyn' wins by landslide in Irish presidential election

Hard left Irish independent Catherine Connolly, who previously accused Israel of behaving like a 'terrorist state', has been confirmed as the new president after claiming a landslide victory to replace Michael D Higgins. Ms Connolly, 68, trounced former cabinet minister Heather Humphreys, 62, after third candidate ex-Dublin Gaelic football manager Jim Gavin withdrew from campaigning three weeks ago - although he remained on the ballot paper. Her victory was confirmed at Dublin Castle on Saturday evening, where she was congratulated by Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Simon Harris and left-wing opposition parties who backed her.
