British gardeners have been warned to be on the lookout for a fast-spreading fungus that is not as delightful as it sounds. Honey fungus, also known as 'golden mushroom' or Armillaria mellea, is a common species that infects and kills trees and woody shrubs. Populations of the pathogenic species have increased by 200 per cent in Britain in the past year, according to iNaturalist.
