Chance discovery on Welsh beach uncovered daring £7million drugs smuggling plot
This is the trailer for a new two-part BBC documentary called Cannabis Cove: Operation Seal Bay. It has been more than 40 years since Don Evans was called to a remote Welsh beach to investigate one of the most extraordinary discoveries ever uncovered on British shores. For the bizarre find - a yacht hatch built into the beach that led to an underground bunker - would ignite an international police operation that stretched from Wales to Denmark, the Middle East and beyond. Eventually, it would expose the masterminds behind one of the boldest drug-smuggling plots the UK had ever seen. It was June 1983 when Don - then a Detective Chief Inspector - got the call-out to an isolated beach near Newport, Pembrokeshire, along with his colleague, fellow DCI Derek Davies. The mysterious cavern below was hollowed out of the rock and lined with fibreglass resin to hold back the damp. Inside lay pristine boating equipment laid out as if ready for immediate use.
