Plans are unveiled for massive expansion of facial recognition cameras
Plans for a mass rollout of facial recognition cameras in cities, towns and even villages across the country sparked fears of a 'Big Brother Britain'. Ministers are seeking new laws about the use of the technology to pave the way for a major expansion, putting cameras in every police force area. But critics hit out at the 'dystopian' plan, citing concern at the 'erosion of civil liberties'. In a consultation launched, the public will be asked whether police should be able to go beyond their records to access other databases. Civil servants are working with police to establish a new national facial recognition system. The platform will be capable of searching a range of databases such as custody images and immigration records. It will also feature missing people, including children. Former shadow home secretary David Davis raised concerns after police leaders said the cameras could be placed at shopping centres, stadiums and transport hubs.
