Lightning storms around Tonga eruption recreated in data visualisation

The underwater volcano off Tonga began a major eruption on Jan. 13, accompanied by one of the largest volcanic lightning events ever. The surrounding islands were completely engulfed in lightning at various stages of the eruption which lasted days.
