Alexei Surovtsev made it his mission to help defenceless kittens in the conflict

In one clip he can be seen entering a building damaged by fire, as remnants of a blaze continue to burn, to get some kittens trapped in the house out. Footage shows him taking care of the animals, taking the strays into his own house.
