High energy costs are motivating Limburg fruit grower Roel Paesmans not to harvest 120 tons of pears and to leave them hanging on the trees because of astronomical refrigeration costs. After the pick the pears are stored under refrigerated conditions for around a year, but the farmerβs electricity costs have gone through the roof increasing tenfold.
